It goes without saying that we celebrate Black history 365 around here. February is simply the anniversary of our yearlong celebration. That being said, we’re always looking for new ways to celebrate us and share our history with our kids.
We’ve been hearing from some parents that Black history month isn’t even being acknowledged where their kids attend school. This highlights why we have to be our kids best advocate. Making a call or sending an email to the principal of the school is certainly an option. Black history is American history. American history does not exist without Black people. We’ve been here longer than the U.S. has been a country so it’s time folks recognize the truth of the matter.
Around these parts, we also fully support being our kids teacher. Even if things aren’t being taught at school, there’s no reason we can’t share lessons we value at home. If you’re open for some ideas to spread the knowledge, we’ve got you covered. Keep reading for some ideas to celebrate Black everyday.
Everyone knows about the top three: Martin Luther King, Jr, Malcolm X and Harriet Tubman. It’s at home where our kids will learn about other notable figures in history. Our first suggestion for Black history everyday is to find a new historical figure to learn about. There are plenty!
Speaking of Dr. King, take some time to re-learn his teachings. He was about more than his dream speech but that’s what’s been popularized.
Remember back when Black films seemed to be dropping every weekend? It was back in the Love and Basketball, Love Jones and Brown Sugar days. Say a prayer we get those kinds of movies on the regular again. In the meantime, watch Black films on your favorite streaming service. Netflix and Amazon Prime has plenty. You’ll definitely find some you haven’t even heard of.
Speaking of movies, there are tons of great documentaries too! Not too long ago there was one about the friendship/brotherhood between Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali. It gave some insight and background info. There’s no shortage of good, informative documentaries.
We’re big on reading books around here. Books by Black authors – even better! Check out some books by some of your favorite Black authors and find some new writers to love. Check out this book club curated by yours truly for some suggestions.
Another idea to further support Black people is to donate to or join a Black organization. There are several to choose from. There are national groups to support but I’m sure there are local ones to look into as well.
Checking out a museum is always a good idea. Go venture off to some that will likely have Black exhibits – even if it’s just for this month.
Last, but not least on our list is supporting Black businesses. There are more businesses now than ever it seems. We are making strides in fashion, hair care, shoes, handbags and anything else you can think of. We follow this page and this one to learn about lots of different Black businesses.
Is there anything you would add to our list of ways to celebrate Black history everyday?
