I picked this book up for the title alone. I was intrigued! It didn’t disappoint. This was a book that made me think. The main character, Gilda, is a young woman who is dealing with depression and anxiety issues. Oh, and she can’t stop thinking about death.
In her search for support, she responds to a flyer for free therapy at a local Catholic church. The Father of the church assumes she’s there about the receptionist position that’s open at the church. She’s too embarrassed to correct him. She sends up getting a job there as a receptionist. The thing is, she’s an atheist and she’s a lesbian. So she’s doing a bit of acting to keep this job.
This book is equal parts funny and insightful. Gilda gets herself into a number of completely avoidable situations. All she needs to do is speak up to avoid them. It’s insightful for me as someone who has friends that suffer from depression. It gave me a glimpse into what that looks like from their perspective and what they need from me.
She also has a number of family issues that will make you scream at the book. This was definitely a page turner for me. It was equal parts funny and eye opening.
