We eased into black history month on the heels of watching the first Black Vice President being sworn in. Not only the first Black person, but a woman and an HBCU grad. All firsts! What can’t we do? So needless to say, we are feeling pretty good about Black History Month 2021. Honestly, after 2020, we needed something to feel good about.
Celebrating our Blackness isn’t a one month thing. It’s definitely Black History 365 around here. Our history is a complicated one. It’s truly a miracle we’re still here. That’s one thing you have to love about us. Our resilience seems to be unmatched. How on earth have we survived so much? On top of making it through some of the worse times in history we still manage to find joy. We find humor. We create in a way that influences and changes the entire culture. How can you not love that?
Black is Magic
Being black is a gift. We wouldn’t trade it. It’s being a part of a community with a language all our own. So much can be summed up in what we don’t say. It can be a head nod, a side eye or a fist in the air. We all know what it means. We raise kids that know their worth, and embrace their brilliance. Our magic is obvious and we claim it. Our joy is revolutionary and we express it unapologetically. While its clear so many would like us to believe we are less than, we know better. We know we stand on the shoulders of giants.
When you know that you descend from the ones that made it, you walk taller. If they made it through slavery, reconstruction and Jim Crow, what can’t you make it through? So adjust your crown, Queen! It’s your inheritance. It’s been hard earned. All you have to do is put it on. Happy Black History Month! Let’s continue to make historic moves together.
