Spring is literally around the corner and we can’t wait! Here in Southern California, we have been dealing with lots of rain. Here’s hoping it at least ends our drought. While Spring definitely means new blooms and bringing things back to life, we think that should include our skin! If you’re anything like us, your skin has taken a hit with this winter weather. We have gone through so many lotions and body butter, it’s kind of embarrassing. We’re looking forward to not needing to layer on so much heavy stuff to get that glow.
We’ve been scanning the web to find some Black-owned skincare brands to try out. If anyone knows how to take care of our melanin it’s probably us, right? We’ve tried out a few of these and others we want to try out soon.
Jacq’s is a brand we found out about from Blk + Grn. It’s a vegan, sustainable, and organic skincare brand by women of color. We tried the cleanser, toner, and moisturizer and loved them. The standout was the moisturizer that was so light. It’s great for Spring and Summer months when it’s warmer and more humid. The last thing you want is to feel smothered by your skincare.
Another stand out is The Healing Place Apothecary. While we didn’t try a bunch of the products we did try the moisturizer. Listen, if the rest of the products are like that – we’re all in. The moisturizer felt like dipping your fingers into a cloud. It’s fluffy and goes on light. Even though it’s light, it still feels like it’s enough. Like it’s doing its job. It gave the face a dewy look. Gotta love that! The good and the bad are it’s made in small batches. It’s good because you get fresh products. It’s bad because the stuff you really want may just be sold out and you have to wait for the next batch. Worth it though.
It took a while to come around to the sunscreen party but we’re here. One of the things that helped seal the deal is Black Girl Sunscreen. Being a Black girl, the sunscreen struggle was real. That white cast so many of them leave is just no bueno. That’s why we love that BGS is made for us and by us and blends in like a lotion. Pssst… we keep it stocked for the kids too.
While we’re talking about skincare we have to include things we eat and drink, right? Golde has some yummy-looking superfoods including collagen to drink. We absolutely want to try that! They also have skincare products we’ve got our eyes on too.
Someone send us everything on The Butter Bar Skincare website! It’s like a self-care playland and we want in. The serums, the face masks, and the scrubs – you could make a spa day at home.
Have you tried any of these brands?
