Did you know that April is Black Women’s History Month? If you didn’t, you’re not alone. Take this opportunity to go ahead and plug it into your calendar. We’re all for any moment that we get to celebrate us! While March is Women’s History Month, it’s great to have a month solely set aside for the history of Black women and a chance to honor those contributions. In the days of re-writing and erasing history, this couldn’t be more needed.

So, what does one do to celebrate this month? Glad you asked! There are several things we can do to live it up this month and polish the crowns of our melanated queens in the process. We can take some time this month to learn more about some of the overlooked women in Black history. One that comes to mind is Mary McLeod Bethune. I had no idea how much she was involved with the federal government to get things done for the community. There’s also Fannie Lou Hamer. She risked her life and suffered so much to move our community forward. Mollie Moon also comes to mind. Her incredible story is detailed in this book.
Other ways to acknowledge this month could be to support Black Women-owned businesses. There are several we love. Start with Black and Green for natural non-toxic products, and the Spice Suite for everything you need to make food you want to stay home for.
Watch shows and movies with Black Women lead characters. Another option, find documentaries about historical figures. While we’re on the entertainment front. There’s a great curated playlist for the month. You can check it out here! Maybe those songs will inspire you to make your own history.
How will you celebrate this month?
