March is women’s history month and today is International Women’s Day. It’s a global holiday that serves as the focal point in the women’s rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. Of course, it’s the perfect time to reflect and highlight some pretty fab women. We do so much and continue to make history. We’re looking at you Beyonce with a record-breaking number of Grammy awards. We’re also looking at our first Black Vice President Kamala Harris. While these women are extraordinary, there are some amazing women closer to home too.
Think about your circle. There are definitely women who are doing amazing things and should be celebrated today. We spent part of the morning at a virtural event with Hey Mama. They talked a bit about celebrating the power of female to female support. It’s absolutely true that when women link up, we can move mountains. Everyday we make history in some way, break through glass ceilings, chase dreams and kids – and do it beautifully. We have women in our lives who are starting or growing businesses, moving up in their careers, and traveling the globe. We have gone from #teamnosleep to being all about the soft life.
Celebrations
So, how do we celebrate the day? In China, women get the day off. In other countries flowers sell out because so many women are being gifted floral bouquets. Ladies, I don’t think we’re doing enough over here in the good ole U.S. Ha! Let’s make this a day about sisterhood and celebrating the women in our lives (including ourselves). Maybe make it an annual dinner with your fellow mamas. A spa day is never a bad idea either. We could also take some time to amplify those organizations that we love that support women.
This year’s theme is #EmbraceEquity. The goal is to work for “equity–based solutions” that “take into account the diverse lived experiences of individuals and communities, adapting services and policies according to these differences.” The theme was carried over in the Hey Mama event this morning too. We know we’re a long way from things being equitable for women, especially Black women.
There are lots of events to get involved in every year. Find one and invite the mamas in your life. If you don’t find one you want to attend, you can absolutely create your own.
