When creating the Black Mom Squad, the goal has always been to be a community for us, by us. We encourage you to share your stories or reach out for a quick Q + A. If you’re interested in sharing your story hit this link and get in touch. We’d love to hear from you. Today we’re sharing a Q+A sesh to get to know one of our readers. Cheryl B. is a mom of a teen daughter living in the Atlanta area.
TBMS: What is Black motherhood to you?
C.B. : Black motherhood is bearing everything for our families and our communities. It is essential to the African American race. Black mothers nurture in a different way to our children and our community.
TBMS:What makes Black motherhood different?
C.B. :We bear the burden and weight of pass inequalities that have kept many black mothers disenfranchised and on the lower economic end of wealth. We nurture in a different way because we know eventually our children will be judged because of the color of their skin and not the intellect in which they posses.
TBMS: How are you like your mother?
C.B. : I am like my mother because I am always taking care of everybody around me. I watched my mother always take care of her loved ones and I know that I am like her in many ways.
TBMS: What would you tell the kid version of yourself – now?
C.B. : If I could go back to the kid version of me, I would tell myself that I am going to make mistakes in life and to not be so hard on myself for those mistakes. Learn from them and take it as life lessons.
TBMS: What’s the best part of being a mom?
C.B. : My favorite part of being a mom is watching my daughter learn life lessons. It hurts to see her hurt but knowing she sees the lessons and learns the lesson is the greatest feeling. The hardest part of being a mom is the teenage years for a girl.
TBMS: What are your dreams for your daughter?
C.B. :My dreams for my daughter are to be a law abiding, productive, self respecting citizen. I pray she chooses a career that will satisfy her and makes her happy.
