How did you plan for this year? Did you make any plans? Some people can’t wait to get a planner. Others get really creative with a vision board. Some people, still, keep it really simple by choosing a word of the year or an affirmation to carry them through the year. All of those things could not have prepared us for what we walked into with 2021.
We were all looking forward to 2021 because 2020 was just one gut punch after another. However, I think we all knew on some level that it would be a continuation of 2020. Let’s be real, the pandemic hasn’t gone anywhere and wasn’t going to magically disappear just because the calendar changed. We voted overwhelmingly for a new administration and that felt good. Finally there would be grown ups in the room. One could hold out hope though for better, right?
Challenge after challenge was thrown around by the current Occupant and they were shut down. The minute we try to exhale a bit, something else would happen. As we rolled into the new year we had another election with all eyes on Georgia. We all hoped for the best and thanks to some Black Girl Magic, we pulled it off. That was January 5th.
January 6th
What happened on January 6th though was a whole other thing. A mob descended on D.C., at the invitation of the Occupant, and carried out a full on insurrection while we watched. 2020 may be gone but the shenanigans are hanging around. There have been so many things that have taken place over the last year, let alone the last four years, that we never thought we’d see in our lifetimes. Some good, some bad. That double standard of justice we witnessed, when the gang of the Occupants supporters were allowed to roam freely, was not new. It was remarkably different than anything we’d seen over the Summer when we were protesting for our lives.
You can’t help but wonder if the country is falling apart so that something better can take shape. That’s the hope over here. Otherwise, what world will be left for our children. We want to believe that all of this disruption and destruction will lead to something that looks like equality. We hope for something that looks like major change and reform on every level in this country. We’ll be doing our part to work toward it. Our kids deserve it and so do we. We’re holding on to shreds of hope around here and pressing on, looking forward. So Happy New Year, Moms. We made it to 2021, that fact alone means we won. #202WON
